What are Thermal Windows?
Thermal windows are a type of window with energy efficient features. Thermal replacement windows, sometimes called thermal pane windows, are windows that are made up of multiple panes of high-performance energy efficient glass—making them more energy efficient than standard single pane windows.
By incorporating two or three panes of glass with insulating gas between each pane, energy consumption is reduced because the transfer out heat is significantly diminished.
How Do Thermal Windows Improve Energy Efficiency?
Thermal windows have panes of glass that are separated by an insulated gas filled gap. This insulating gas reduces the amount of heat that is transferred between the interior and exterior of your home or business. During warm summer months, insulated thermal windows will prevent much of the heat outside from entering the house and in the winter months, less heat from inside the home will transmit out. Windows can account for 30 percent or more of a home’s heating and cooling costs, so upgrading to thermal windows can significantly improve the energy efficiency of your home or business.
In addition to insulating gas between multiple panes of glass, thermal windows incorporate energy efficient glass, like our Zo-e-Shield glass system. Energy efficient low-e glass helps to further improve a window’s energy efficiency by blocking heat-generating UV light while allowing visible light to pass through. Incorporating low-e glass into windows can significantly decrease your heating and cooling bills. In fact, installing a double pane window with low-e glass can actually reduce your heating and cooling costs by more than installing triple pane windows!
Other Types of Thermal Windows
If you are searching for information about thermal windows, you may have also been looking for the ancient Roman style of thermal windows, also referred to as Diocletian windows. These windows are arched or semicircular shaped and generally comprised of three distinct sections separated by two vertical mullions.
These windows have seen a rise in popularity in recent years, but are now known and marketed under several different names. Our custom special shape window options can allow you to create the classical and distinctive look of Diocletian thermal windows for your home or business.
