Warning Signs for Replacing Your Windows

So you’re starting to have problems with your windows, but you’re unsure at what point you should finally just purchase new replacement windows. Sometimes the need for replacement is obvious—if your window is broken, for example—but other times, problems are evident but may not seem severe enough to warrant replacement.

If you notice any of the following problems with your windows, it is time to have them replaced:

Your Windows Feel Drafty

If you can feel air entering your home around the window frames, it is time to replace your windows. Over time, vinyl can warp and wood can crack and rot—creating gaps in the frame that allow air to enter. This will lead to less comfortable conditions inside your home and increased energy bills to compensate for the added air infiltration

Your Windows Become Hard to Open or Close

When your windows are new, they glide open and closed with the slightest push of the finger, but over time, they can become increasingly difficult to operate. One of the most obvious signs that you need window replacement is when your windows become very difficult to open and close. If you are struggling to open or close your windows—or if they will not stay open—it is time to replace.

Your Windows Have Condensation Inside the Glass

Multi-paned windows are typically sealed with a pocket of insulating gas in between the glass. If you are noticing condensation between the panes of glass in your windows, this means that the seal has broken and the window has lost its energy efficiency. This cannot be repaired, so your windows must be replaced—unless you want to suffer higher energy bills and more heat transfer into and out of your home.

Your Energy Bills Are Increasing

While energy bills can go up for a number of reasons unrelated to the energy efficiency of your home—rate hikes, for example—if you notice that your energy bills are increasing, it may be time to replace your windows. On many homes, windows can account for as much as 50 percent of the energy loss. Simply replacing your windows with new energy-efficient models can significantly lower your energy bills—even pay for themselves over time!
