This blog post, the first of a four-part series highlighting the most popular types of windows on the market, will focus on the most popular style of window in the United States today—the double hung window.
Double hung windows have risen to great popularity due to their classic aesthetics and flexible operation capabilities.
History of Double Hung Windows
Double hung windows were first introduced in the United Kingdom. Their creation is generally attributed to Robert Hooke, a surveyor in London and an assistant to a prominent architect in the city. Double hung windows first emerged after the Great Fire of 1666 in London, although the exact date is not known. The oldest known double hung windows date back to the 1670s and look remarkably similar to double hung windows still produced today.
Double hung windows rose to popularity in the United States following World War II when massive homebuilding projects emerged to house returning soldiers in the nation’s newly created suburbs, where they cemented their position as a leading fenestration product—remaining there even today.
What Are Double Hung Windows?
Double hung windows are a style of window in which both sashes in the frame are operable. This differs from single hung windows where the top sash is fixed in place and cannot move or tilt in. Double hung windows generally feature sashes that are capable of tilting inward for easy cleaning—allowing you to more easily and quickly clean your windows.
