Choosing the Best Windows for Increased Home Security

3/28/2015 8:45:19 AM

If your old, worn out and warped windows have you worried about home security, it could be time to consider new replacement windows. New windows have superior features for a secure home, such as newer locking technology and stronger materials. But what are the best types of windows for keeping your home safe? Consider which ones rank highest on our list here.

Casement Windows for Home Security

This window style has a single pane that swings outward vertically via an internal gear mechanism. You control how far you want the window to open with a crank mounted to the interior window frame. The crank-action movement makes a casement window perfect for hard-to-reach places, such as behind the kitchen sink.

The casement window is considered the most secure type of window because, with no way to turn the crank from the outside, there’s really no way an intruder could enter your home through the window if you’re sure to close and lock it. No additional hardware is needed to make the casement window more secure.

Sliding Windows for Home Security

This type of window includes one operable sash that slides horizontally. It has large panes of glass, making it great for expansive outdoor views and a nice breeze when you open the window all the way. The sliding action makes it a good alternative to the casement window when there’s not enough outdoor clearance.

A sliding window comes with a cam action lock designed to stop the operable pane from sliding back and forth. For added security, you can install a burglar bar between the window frame and sliding sash. With the tension set properly, there’s no way anyone can operate the window from the outside.

Double-Hung Windows for Home Security

This classic style of window glides vertically up and down. As opposed to single-hung windows, the double-hung variety has two operable sashes. This allows you the safety and convenience of opening the upper sash for ventilation, making this the perfect type of window for a small child’s bedroom.

A double-hung window features the same cam action lock as a sliding window. This lock holds both sashes in place so they can’t move. To increase security further, many new double-hung windows come with an additional a piece of hardware installed on the face of the top sash’s frame. When the tab is pushed in, the bottom sash moves freely, but when extended, the window is locked securely in place. If you have older double-hung windows, you can purchase this hardware separately and install it on each window for added home security.
