Background on the Project

Completed in August 2014, Naperville Park District’s Knoch Knolls Nature Center in Naperville, IL, recently received its LEED Platinum certification. The project’s most notable feature/function is the butterfly-shaped roof that cleverly funnels rainwater through a clear pipe in the building’s lobby into a cistern, where the water is recirculated to irrigate the plant life on the living wall in the atrium. The news release on the project’s completion explains this design element in greater detail and provides more context as to how the building was able to achieve the highest level of certification.

As with any building, the windows play a large part in both efficiency and aesthetics. The Knoch Knolls Nature Center uses Weather Shield Signature Series direct set, awning and custom, triangle-shaped windows. The architect, Wight & Co. in Darian, IL, originally specified aluminum windows but was convinced that the Signature Series’ aluminum clad exteriors and wood interiors would lend greater energy efficiency and provide the appearance of aluminum windows on the exterior with warm wood interiors that complemented the timber ceiling beams and other wood-centric design elements.
